After being almost late for last week’s DU2DS Challenge, I’m kind of early this week, LOL! Well, that’s because my mind is still on teapots (check my April 30th post), and how to decorate them. The sketch provided at DU2DS put me in high gear right away, and I’m pretty happy with how this project turned out.  We (that means DH and I) haven’t released this template on Gem’s Cottage yet, as we had some setbacks. Hopefully, it will be up by Monday. Sooo, back to this project, I used Squareweave Chocolate from The Paper Company for the teapot base, Truffle cardstock from Bazzil (medium brown), cream dotted paper and ribbon from my stash. The coffee cup image is one I made myself (if you are interested to have it, ask and it shall be given ;-),  post a comment  and I will e-mail it to you), colored with Prismas and blended with… baby oil! “Coffee break” is printed using the font BlizzardD. I’m planning to fill up this pot with several single-serve coffee packets, sugar and creamer for my DD’s teacher(s). For those who don’t drink coffee, I’ll fill the teapot (decorated like the pink one in my previous blog entry) with tea and honey instead.

The challenge for DU2DS this week is “Things with Wings“, and since I was working on a teapot template this past week, I thought that I might as well incorporate it into the challenge. This project was easy to make once I had the template down (this template will be one of the new releases in my site, Gem’s Cottage,  tomorrow!). Pink card stock for the main teapot base is from The Paper Company, Tinted Dawn; the patterned paper (I just love it!) is from Making Memories, Noteworthy Audrey; pink flowers with brads from Making Memories; blue butterflies are from Simple Sampler, recolored with Prisma Color Pencils and glittered. So if it was easy, what took me so long?  Well, I actually started with a different colored cardstock (a lovely shade of purple), put some flowers and the butterflies – it didn’t work, so set it aside. Next day, undid the flowers and butterflies, tore off the background paper, put different paper, etc, etc – still didn’t work.  The next day, same thing, until I told myself: stop working on it and choose another color scheme instead! This pink one was done in less than an hour! *Sigh* Some days, I really can’t get purple right, LOL! Here’s how the final purple teapot looks like – I think it’s okay – but I’m still not that happy with it!

Remember my struggles with the DU2DS  challenge last week? (Scroll down to last week’s post if  you weren’t around, LOL) Well, no such thing this week – this card came together like a dream!  Thanks to your comments and encouragements, I did not have to throw a mountain of crumpled paper in the waste basket, LOL. Before I started on this card though, I’d like to thank the ladies at Split Coast Stamper’s Forum – they were the ones who set me on the right path. First, Meg (WAXYO) gave this link for those who were asking how to color with odorless mineral spirits. The instructions were very clear, so I went to Michaels and bought the Prisma Color pencils, looked for odorless mineral spirits but they didn’t have it.  I did more searching and Estelle (mamahowe) suggested using baby oil, because it’s what she uses! I forgot to buy the blending stumps, and my DD, who attended an art class when she was in the elementary grades, said that they make their own (you can see how here).  I was all set, and I chose to color the rose digi-stamp I was so frustrated with last week (scroll down and you will see it, it’s free!).  The result is the image above – it was so easy and satisfying to do – I was surprised! With the coloring done, the rest of the card came together quickly. I used a MS border punch for the “doily” frame – instructions on how to do this are here (scroll down to Jay’s  April 15, 2009 post – thanks Jay!).  I even managed to put bling again – yes, I think I am getting addicted, LOL! Green cardstock is from Martha Stewart,  light pink paper (antique bubble gum) is from The Paper Patch, all the rest is from my stash, sentiment is printed using Albemarle Swash font.  Thanks again to the design team of DU2DS, specially Chris and Sandra, for the challenge. Oh, where is the sentiment you say?  The rose motif swings away to reveal the sentiment:

Bling Challenge on DU2DS

du2ds-bling

The second challenge at DU2DS is bling – and I struggled, for two reasons. First reason is, I am not used to putting bling on things I create. It’s just the way I am, if you meet me in person, you will notice that the only jewelry I wear is my wedding ring, and it translates to my craft. I have nothing against jewelry or sparkly stuff, again, it’s just the way I am. The second reason why I struggled is coloring stamped images. Taking the advice of Kim Fee (note her comment in my first DU2DS), I got the watercolor pencils out, chose a digi stamp (line art of Snookie)  then started coloring. Arrrrgh! After printing several times and after coloring several images, nothing came out the way I wanted. Sooo, not willing to give up easily, I thought maybe I should use another digi stamp.  I created this line art for a rose – see end of this post and for you digi stampers out there, you are welcome to snag it if you want, no restrictions in its use (just right-click on the image and save in your disk). But then again, same results as before, nothing came out the way I wanted.  At this point (note that I’ve been working on this challenge for several days already), I’m throwing in the towel temporarily. Maybe working with watercolor pencils is not for me, next time, I’ll try using what most stampers use – Prismacolor pencils or Copic markers. I went back to the colored digital images of Snookie and used  her in the card I made above.  The card is pretty simple, but I do like how the small rhinestones complemented the paper-piercing at the corners – I guess that’s a small victory for me, at least. Thanks to the people at DU2DS who come up with these challenges, I got out of my comfort zone, LOL!

I recently discovered Dare U 2 Digi Stamp and it gave me the inspiration to make this card and  to update my blog more frequently, LOL! I used the sketch indicated in DU2DS (with some minor changes) and am quite pleased with how it turned out (it reminds me of my kids).  Making the card itself was easy, it’s choosing the papers to use that took long – and I cannot identify where two of the papers came from because they are scraps! The blue one is from The Paper Patch – Antique Periwinkle. The digi stamp (or digital image or clip art as some may prefer to call it) is from the set Snookie – I chose the colored one already because I don’t trust myself coloring it yet with copics or prisma (can you tell I’m new to this? LOL).  For those who want to color the stamps themselves,  Gem’s Cottage also offers Snookie – Line Art. After printing the image at half its normal size, I cut it out then attached it with 3D Pop Dots. The sentiment was printed directly on the blue paper using the font Girls are Weird.
